How to Start Your Labrador Puppy Training

Adequate Time

Having enough time to effectively introduce you pet to her new environment is the first step in successful Labrador puppy training.  Just imagine how daunting it must be for the pup to have all his senses bombarded with all of the characteristics of her new residence.

Although you might believe you are giving your dog so much of your time on that first day, just keep in mind the time you give up on that first day you will get back over and over in the course of the rest of your time with your Lab.

Food and Treats

A component of the homework you need to do before you bring your Lab pup home is to find out what meals it is best to and must not give to your dog, and also to have some awareness of the quantities she needs to be eating. Be sure to determine what meals are correct for you pup but may well not be so smart for him once he gets older.

It really is also a great idea to do your research on food items that can be utilised as treats - items that are not within your dog's usual diet and are not going to be undesirable for her.  Despite your homework, your puppy will always have the final say in what is in fact a treat for her, she will have to really appreciate eating the treat for it act as a reward for him.

Your puppy might be presently enjoying some food that you had certainly not considered feeding him. Figuring out what he eats right now and feeding him this initially will take away one source of stress from your pup's transition to his new household.  The meals that suit your circumstances and lifestyle choices can then be substituted at feeding time over the coming weeks and months.

Toilet

All of us who have spent any time with a pup will realize that lavatory activities take up a considerable amount of the pup's time. So you need to be tolerant and be ready to have a few late nights and early mornings in the name of your Labrador puppy training. Do not go more than 45 minutes or so without giving your pup the chance to go to the bathroom.  If he goes on any visit, then reward him for his endeavours, otherwise calmly go back to what you were doing, but give him an further chance soon afterwards. Keep in mind, it's not fair on your pup to keep him on his own for any length of time after a failed bathroom trip - he'll be even more prone to need at that time.

Socialising

An essential part of Labrador puppy training should be to make sure your Lab is safely exposed to as many different situations at young an age as possible.  Your puppy becomes more of a 'man of the world' and finds each new situation less threatening than the one before.  It is necessary during this stage of your Labrador puppy training that you have the knowledge to keep your puppy feeling safe.

A sometimes missed method to increase the puppy's knowledge of helpful encounters is to go on a car journey.  Take care that the journey's end does not hold any hidden hazards that may unsettle your pup and could spoil the experience of car journeys for him.

Obedience

Although it is never too late to start your Labrador puppy training strategy, unless you are your own Labrador breeder, it is practically never too early either.  Your puppy is old enough to start basic training exercises by the time he is old enough to leave his mother.

You can start out with fundamental obedience training exercises to get him to sit, stand and lie down.  The pup will never have the ability to resist following you once you appeal to his curiosity in the correct way.  Use a toy to attract the puppy's attention as he's lying down, and move the toy in order that he follows it and gets up,  at this point say to him 'Good Stand'.  He'll soon learn how to lie down and sit too, with variations of this method.

Summary

The critical components of success in the course of your Labrador puppy training are to prepare ahead and always put the concentrate on reward for accomplishment and not on punishment for failure

Labrador Training in 1-2-3 steps

The one huge Labrador Training mistake to avoid

The biggest error a great number of Lab enthusiasts make is always to be seduced by their dog's intelligence. All of those qualities that help make Labradors such excellent pets cover up one massive secret – underneath it all, your Lab is still a dog.

Plenty of Labrador owners are blinded by their dog's apparent humanity, and see their pets as part of mankind. Falling for this one basic mistake will make the job of educating your Labrador so much more tricky.
How does this have an impact on the way you teach your Lab? It is best to keep in mind your Labrador is a dog, and that means you will have to think like a dog too, to make the education work.

If the dog doesn't see you as top dog in its pack then all of your Labrador training is just about certain to be doomed to failure.

Two Important Labrador Training Rules

Create a Structure

It is really best to start your Lab training while your pet is still a pup. Around 10-12 weeks is a sensible time to start with uncomplicated lessons, but make certain your puppy is accustomed to socialising first - this will likely help prevent any aggression problems in later life. Take into account, your pup's mother has been schooling him since he was born, so don't let your pet get too much out of the instruction habit before you take over.

Get into a program of having regular schooling sessions so your pet gets in to the idea, but keep them short at first to keep your dog focused, and avoid the pet getting bored or distracted. Just as important as having a reasonably established timetable to help your dog to get the most from its schooling, is understanding the situations when your dog does not get the most from a training session - like once he is over excited about anything, as an example .

Make your Commands Clear and Straightforward

Hopefully you've already taken on board the initial subject in this posting, and are aware that, no matter how cute your dog is, it is certainly not going to be ready to speak with you. Given that your Lab is just not aware of the finer details of grammer and volcabulary, you must be sure your communication to your pet is clear and concise.

Use one or two word commands, in a clear and audible voice. At all times use the exact same command for the same task, and attempt to ensure that your tone of voice is the same each and every time too. Reinforce your command with a clear hand signal, and precisely the same guidelines apply for this as well – always the exact same sign for any specified task, and seek to be as repetitive as possible when making the sign.

Three Lab Training Tools that you could use

Labrador Crate Training

Numerous Lab enthusiasts think putting their dog inside a crate (or cage) must be cruel, but in reality your dog's ancestors would have looked for a cave or something similar as being a risk-free site to rest,  the crate is meeting exactly that identical purpose for the present-day generation of Labs.
Getting your pet accustomed to having his crate as being a relaxed and secure spot to be can be a great aid in cutting down tension and pressure to your dog, and additionally to you too. Not to mention minimizing damage around the home.
I don't have to tell you that if your Labrador is to feel safe and secure in its crate, then they should never be put in the crate as a punishment, and that the Lab should have one or two 'creature comforts' in there – like a drink and one toy – to make it feel more at home in their crate.

Leash Training

A lot of Lab owners have found leash training useful, particularly for keeping bigger, older dogs under control. It is well known fact that guide dogs wear a harness, so that alone should be sufficient to check out how using a leash or a harness could help out with your dog.

Clicker Training

A lot of Lab owners see Clicker Training as something of a passing fashion, while others swear by it. Space is too limited here to do justice to all the pros and cons of clicker training here, but it's sufficient to say that clicker training may be something you want to find out more about if you are not making sufficient progress with your Lab's training.
